POSITION OVERVIEW
The Certifying Health Professional (CHP) is a member of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) team. WIC is a public health nutrition program that supports families by providing nutrition education, nutritious foods, breastfeeding support, and referrals to healthcare providers and other social services. The CHP is responsible for conducting WIC certifications including nutrition assessments and education as well as breastfeeding education and support to participants.

ESSENTIAL DUTIESAssists with WIC certification and direct nutrition services to participants;

• Reviews participant anthropometric, health and dietary information
• Conducts health and nutrition assessments including interviews with participants to determine appropriate care plans that align with participant needs and goals
• Identifies medical/nutrition risk factors to certify participants for WIC program
• Collaborates with participants to set attainable goals designed to improve participants’ health and nutrition
• Provides relevant nutrition counseling and education to participants
• Determines appropriate supplemental food package for participants following assessment
• Performs height/length, weight and hemoglobin screenings
• Refers participants to other public health services, social service agencies or healthcare providers
• Promotes and supports breastfeeding
• Documents all participant data and services performed in accordance with applicable Wood County Health Department and Ohio WIC policies and procedures  

• Fosters an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust and respect, working with various groups in a culturally-appropriate and effective manner
• Cross trains in basic Clinic Services Assistant responsibilities to assist as needed with duties including but not limited to verifying participant eligibility, completing WIC Program Applications, answering phones, running reports and maintaining participant charts 

• Engages in personal career growth and development activities
• Aligns work to support the Wood County Health Department mission, vision, goals and objectives
• Adheres to both federal and state civil rights’ and anti-discrimination laws
• Travels to off-site locations or satellite clinics as required

 

MINIMUM CREDENTIALS/EDUCATION

 Must possess one of the following minimum credentials/education:

• Registered Dietitian (RD) with licensure (LD) in the State of Ohio*
• Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Ohio
• Dietetic Technician Registered (DTR)
• Four-year nutrition/dietetics graduate

*Preference will be given to currently Registered Dietitians licensed in the State of Ohio.

 Required License

• A valid State of Ohio driver’s license. Must maintain license throughout employment.

Preferred Experience

• Experience in maternal and child health and nutrition

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 Knowledge of the principles and practices of public health and public health education

• Understanding of office equipment, including computers
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
• Ability to provide proof of current automobile insurance
• Ability to pass a background check
• Ability to travel to off-site locations as required

  

Final candidates must successfully pass a background check and provide proof of a valid State of Ohio driver’s license as well as current automobile insurance.

An individual who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of others in the workplace will be deemed not qualified for this position.
