Sanitarian (SAN)/Sanitarian-in-Training (SIT)

Cuyahoga County Board of Health

Start Date:  May 14, 2018 Salary:  $41,149 (SIT)/$46,991(SAN) Hours:  Mon. – Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 37.5 hours per week, Evenings/weekends as needed

Responsibilities: May include but not limited to:

  • Performs or assists with inspections on various premises, facilities and environmental health systems to ensure compliance with state and local laws.
  • Performs or assists with illness investigations.
  • Documents agency inspection and investigation activities; prepares and maintains records and reports of daily activities. 
  • Engages in training activities to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform public health enforcement activities.
  • Educates operators and the general public on pertinent environmental health programs and prevention techniques.
  • Perform other duties as requested by Supervisor, Deputy Director and/or Director.
  • Participates as needed or requested in the event of any public health emergency.

Minimum Requirements:    

  • Bachelor’s degree with science related coursework (i.e., biology, chemistry, geology, and/or environmental health) which meets the educational requirements set forth by the Ohio Sanitarian Registration Act (Chapter 4736 of the Ohio Revised Code).
  • For Sanitarian
    • Valid State of Ohio registration in accordance with Chapter 4736 of the Ohio Revised Code.
    • Minimum of two years of experience as an SIT.
  • For Sanitarian-in-Training (SIT)
    • Meets educational requirements necessary to make application to the State Board of Sanitarian Registration for registration as a Sanitarian-in-Training.
    • No experience necessary.
  • Good customer service, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal relationship skills including cultural sensitivity and competence.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of fundamental software (i.e. Microsoft Office), email, and use of other basic office equipment.
  • Proficiency with use of databases for data querying and reporting.
  • Ability to serve as a member of a team.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with ongoing proof of state mandated auto insurance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of codes, regulations and basic permitting pertaining to Sewage Treatment Systems, Private Water Systems and Stormwater programming.
  • Experience conducting various sewage treatment system evaluations and inspections.
  • Experience collecting private water samples and other private water system inspections.
  • Experience investigating nuisance complaints as it pertains to water quality programming.
