What You'll Do:

The Bureau of Environmental Health and Radiation Protection is seeking a candidate to fill our Environmental Health Specialist 2 position.  The incumbent of this position will function as a technical expert for lead poisoning and lead poisoning prevention for the Public Health Lead Investigation Program. This position will:

  • review, analyze and evaluate written and verbal referrals or complaints related to childhood lead poisoning and assesses and determines time frame for conducting public health actions or lead investigations and/or refer to a delegated authority.
  • enforce program policies and procedures and ensure uniform interpretation by local lead programs statewide.
  • develop and implement the use of environmental lead inspection forms, records, and other documents required for the conduct of the program.
  • provide technical review of local health department lead programs, reports and summarized findings submitted to ODH; review and compile reports of environmental lead assessments performed by state and local environmental health specialists
  • provide technical assistance and consultation to ODH contractors, general public and industry concerning environmental reviews and other grant-related activities and reports.
  • develop training programs for state and local health department personnel relative to lead poisoning prevention

 Minimum Qualifications:

Certificate of registration as sanitarian-in-training or as sanitarian issued by Ohio State Board of Sanitarian Registration in accordance with Chapter 4736. of Revised Code, or eligible for registration as sanitarian-in-training or sanitarian in accordance with Chapter 4736. of Revised Code & must acquire certificate as registered sanitarian or sanitarian-in-training prior to engaging in practice of environmental health, but no later than 90 days from date of employment; in addition to proceeding, must meet one of following options appropriate to area to be assigned:

Completion of undergraduate degree from accredited college or university including at least 45 quarter or 30 semester units of science courses in areas of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or mathematics & 36 mos. exp. in environmental health science position of which 6 mos. must have been in environmental health specialty area(s) to be assigned; must be able to provide own transportation.

-Or completion of undergraduate degree from accredited college or university with core program in environmental health science & 24 months experience in environmental health science position of which 6 mos. must have been in environmental health specialty areas(s) to be assigned; must be able to provide own transportation.

-Or 6 mos. exp. as Sanitarian Program Specialist 1, 65731 in environmental health specialty area(s) to be assigned; must be able to provide own transportation.

Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria:

Preferred Qualifications:

·    Bachelor's or advanced degree in one of the physical or environmental sciences

·    Registered Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) or Environmental Health Specialist-In-Training (Ohio)

·    Experience in providing technical assistance to local health officials or employment with a local board of health.

·    Licensed as a lead risk assessor in the state of Ohio.

·    Experience in program compliance/enforcement (state or local)

·    Experience developing and/or presenting training/public speaking.

·    Experience using computer software (e.g., MS Word, Access, Excel)

·    Experience writing technical reports.

Ability to deal with & understand most difficult classes of concepts; use proper research methods in gathering data; handle sensitive inquiries from & contact with officials & general public; prepare meaningful, concise & accurate reports; prepare & deliver speeches before specialized audiences & general public; demonstrate physical fitness.

Unless required by legislation, the selected candidate will begin at Pay Grade 33, Step 1 of the OCSEA union, Pay Range Schedule ($30.55 per hour), with an opportunity for pay increase after six months ($32.04) of satisfactory performance and then a yearly raise thereafter.
