TITLE: Epidemiologist

PAY RANGE: Starting rate $61,172 annually; Commensurate with experience
WORK HOURS: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.;
Nights/weekends/holidays may be required.
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Assistant Director of Health Promotion and Preparedness
POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Health Promotion and Preparedness, the Epidemiologist is a core team member who contributes to the planning, development, and implementation of epidemiological programs. This includes performing diverse disease and outbreak investigations (covering both infectious and non-infectious etiologies) and ensuring compliance with applicable public health laws and grant-specific standards. The Epidemiologist may also serve as a technical expert across a broad range of epidemiology-related activities, encompassing chronic disease, social epidemiology, environmental health, infectious disease, and public health data analysis and visualization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
· Implements, and evaluates epidemiologic programs, including investigations, surveillance and other data gathering measures.
· Analyzes and interprets public health data—including infectious disease, chronic disease, lifestyle factors, environmental influences, and social determinants of health—to identify patterns, trends, health disparities, and community health outcomes. This analysis informs reports, health profiles, dashboards and visualizations developed for internal and external stakeholders to support prevention, public health planning and programming.
· Advise Board of Health, agency leadership and collaborating agencies on diseases, outbreaks, environmental health and other population health trends, and community conditions.
· Actively participates in the creation and enhancement of Community Health Assessments and Community Health Improvement Plans.
· Educates and trains diverse partners, staff, and the general public on a variety of epidemiological topics, including disease and outbreak investigation, prevention, public health reporting requirements, data analysis and health trends. Represents the department through public speaking and media engagements.
· With the support of leadership and external legal counsel, ensures that epidemiological plans and policies are consistent with laws and regulations.
· Attends meetings, conferences and training as required and as appropriate.
· Reviews, recommends, and utilizes various software, tools, and technologies relevant to epidemiologic analysis, including surveying platforms, statistical software, artificial intelligence, and geographic information systems. May provide subject matter expertise for local and regional plans and incidents.
· Provides data and information as requested by the Ohio Department of Health or other relevant authorities.
· Actively participates in professional development and knowledge exchange within the field of epidemiology, sharing insights and learning from peers to advance best practices.
· Assists other epidemiology team members and members of the division as needed.
· Supports implementation of the agency’s strategic plan and the accomplishment of agency wide goals and objectives.
· Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM CREDENTIALS/EDUCATION
Minimum Qualifications
Must meet one of the following criteria:
· Newly graduated Master’s degree (with a focus on epidemiology and/or analysis and assessment of health-related data) with less than two years of experience; or
· Bachelor’s or other non-epidemiology professional degree or certification (e.g., RN (Bachelor’s degree), MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, PhD, REHS) without formal academic epidemiology training and with a minimum 2 years of experience performing epidemiology work.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference given to candidates who meet one of the following criteria:
· Master’s degree with a focus in epidemiology with 2 or more years of work experience in epidemiology in a public health agency; or
· Doctoral-level degree in epidemiology or a related discipline (e.g., public health, biostatistics); or
· Other non-epidemiology professional degree or certification (e.g., RN (Bachelor’s degree), MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, PhD, REHS) with specific epidemiology training (e.g., MPH degree, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service program) with 2 or more years of experience performing epidemiology work; or
· Other combination of background and experience, which must include at least 4 years of experience performing epidemiology work
· Experience in Ohio public health

Selected candidates will be required to complete a data analysis skills assessment as part of the hiring process.
Required License
· A valid State of Ohio driver’s license. Must maintain license throughout employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
· Demonstrated knowledge of advanced statistical analysis.
· Ability to maintain information in strict confidentiality as dictated by Ohio law.
· Familiarity with national and state-level disease surveillance systems such as Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS), Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System (OCISS) is preferred.
· Knowledge of public health law, grant writing, data visualization strategies, basic graphic design and communication skills preferred.
· Excellent oral and written communications skills.
· Strong interpersonal skills, essential for delivering effective customer service and establishing productive working relationships with internal and external contacts and other agencies.
· Must have computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, and statistical software, and other programs as appropriate.
· Must be able to conduct basic data analysis in Excel. Doing so using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is preferred.
· Must be able to work independently.
· Must successfully pass a background check.
· Must be able to provide proof of automobile insurance.
· Must have willingness to learn new skills, be adaptable/flexible.
Final candidates must successfully pass a background check and provide proof of a valid State of Ohio driver’s license as well as current automobile insurance.
