Epidemiologist

Description:  Lorain County Public Health is seeking to hire a full-time experienced public health Epidemiologist committed to continuous quality improvement, performance management systems, and improving the health outcomes of Lorain County residents. 

FUNCTION

Under the general direction of the Director of Environmental Health, Emergency Preparedness & Epidemiology, this position is responsible for carrying out a broad range of investigative and analytical epidemiological activities related to the surveillance, detection, and prevention of disease and injury.

JOB DUTIES

  1. Conduct routine epidemiologic functions comprising surveillance, data collection, and data analysis using epidemiologic methods
  2. Assist in the planning and conducting of epidemiologic studies and outbreak investigations
  3. Assist in the collection and analysis of data from community health assessments and other data collection projects
  4. Organize and conduct data analysis projects that assist colleagues and community partners and collaboratives with planning and decision making
  5. Describe the results of data, verbally and written, to the public, external stakeholders, and internal decision-makers through presentations, training, and active participation in meetings
  6. Develop and maintain public-facing health surveillance dashboards
  7. Assist in agency program evaluation in a systematic way that improves and accounts for public health actions
  8. Utilize MS Excel, SPSS, ArcGIS, and other related software programs
  9. Utilize a geographic information system (GIS) for analyzing and mapping health data
  10. Assist with grant reporting deliverables
  11. Work with other internal agency divisions for program collaboration and support
  12. Assist in the preparation of departmental budgeting, where applicable
  13. Assist in public health emergencies during routine and non-routine hours of operation, including 24/7/365 availability
  14. Performs other related and assigned work as required, including travel for training and meetings

 

MAJOR WORK CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of:  public health programs; public health standards as defined by federal, state, and local regulations; the importance of agency policies, practices, and procedures; public relations; risk communication; incident command, safety practices, and procedures.

Ability to:  define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; adapt programs based upon data and community needs, maintain accurate records; communicate effectively in written or oral form; prepare concise and accurate reports, handle sensitive inquiries from officials and the general public, establish self as a leader amongst peers through a positive attitude and mentoring.

Minimum Qualifications:  Possession of a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Biostats, Epidemiology, or a related field.

COMPENSATION: Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. Ohio Public Employee’s Retirement System (PERS). Paid vacation, personal day, holidays, and sick leave. Tuition reimbursement is available.

SALARY: $28.04-$35.78/hr.
